Revival of the Decorated Home

In response to the bland and the beige, a quiet rebellion is building — the return of the decorated home.

The Problem with “Perfect”

We are fast approaching an era of soulless, non-descript, characterless homes. Architecture and interiors that could be anywhere, for anyone — spaces stripped of identity in the pursuit of resale value, minimalism, or Pinterest-perfect presentation.

What we’re losing is the essence of home — the story, the spirit, the quirks that make it yours.

The Rise of the Decorated Home

The decorated home is making a comeback. And no, it doesn’t mean cluttered, chaotic, or fussy.

It means memory-layered. A little mismatched. Full of colour, comfort, family heirlooms, bold fabrics, books, and meaning. A home that reflects the people who live there — not a stylist’s checklist. A space that’s been decorated like someone actually lives in it.

It’s Not About More. It’s About You.

I’m the first to admire an architecturally-designed, timber-lined, open-plan house. But that’s the equivalent of a well-cut pair of jeans and an overpriced white tee. Stylish. Possibly timeless. But it tells me nothing about you.

Great architecture creates beautiful bones. But soul comes from what you put in the space — the layers of history, humour, memory, and meaning.

Yes, You Can Still Afford Meaning

I completely understand — with the cost of construction skyrocketing in this country, going beyond the bare minimum or outside the “norm” can feel out of reach.

But here’s the good news:
There are so many ways to create a home you’re proud of — one that stands the test of time, reflects your family’s character, and doesn’t disappear into the crowd. Soul doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. It starts with intention, not expense.

Trades may not like me for this but we can’t gatekeep insider knowledge and those that need to watch the spending but want something special may just have to be willing to get their hands a little dirty. Pull up your sleeves and lets look at our opportunities.

How to Add Soul to Your Home: A Gentle Rebellion Guide

Limewash Paint

One of my fave designers nailing it again Heidi Caillier

Simple in product, a little tedious in application — but the results? Mind-blowing. Limewash will transport you straight to a French villa, with walls that breathe and patina that builds over time.

Don’t hesitate. It’s worth every brushstroke.

Great suppliers:
Porter’s Paints Interno
Bauwerk Colour (online only, but beautiful)

Hot tip: Don’t forget the ceiling (unless you’re wallpapering). Yes, it’s a skip-arm-day-at-the-gym kind of job, but the results are so worth it.

Patterned & Textured Fabrics

Gorgeous mix of fabrics and colours Chad Wood Interiors

Whether traditional, contemporary, or quirky, fabrics bring softness, improve acoustics, and inject charm. From curtains to cushions, under-sink skirts to pendant lampshades — the options are endless.

Get a basic sewing machine and watch a few YouTube videos. You just need to know how to sew a straight line.

Hot tip: Op shops often have old curtains made from incredible fabric. Hunt around — there are treasures to be found.

Etsy for Lighting

Etsy Arbor & Mud

Etsy is a treasure trove of interesting lighting — sconces, pendants, lamps, you name it. It’s not always the safest bet, but if you check the return policy and get your electrician to inspect the piece, you can end up with something truly special.

Hot tip: Bedside wall lights are best with built-in switches so you don’t need to add an external switch (which are often bulky or expensive to customise).

Vintage Furniture + Joinery

This link is worth clicking - no regrets to be had

Pairing vintage furniture with contemporary joinery creates a home that feels collected, not showroom-styled. A beautiful old wall unit, dresser, or cabinet can add story and texture to an otherwise clean space.

Hot tip: A light sand, a fresh stain, or a recycled stone top can completely transform a tired piece. And if it needs more TLC than you can give, your local Men’s Shed might be able to help revive it.

Decorate with Paint

You don’t need to be an artist to paint your way to a more interesting home. Nervous? Start with furniture — if it’s a disaster, you can always sand it off.

Try:

  • Painting patterns or shapes on furniture or the walls - be brave

  • Using stencils on walls or floors

  • Colour blocking small rooms to start (drench it baby)

Hot tip: Painted furniture is a great gateway to colour confidence. Plus, it’s fun. Avoid kitch, start in the kids room or a little bird on a dresser.

So fun and so layered. Lindsay Gerber Interiors
